Should the Panthers bench Bryce Young?

Every snapshot of Bryce Young feels like Groundhog Day.

The second-year quarterback receives the snap, looks uncomfortable in the pocket, and either checks to a covered running back or forces a ball into coverage, ultimately failing. We are seventeen and a half games into the Bryce Young era, and all the data says he is not an NFL-level quarterback.

In the first half of the game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Young completed eight of 10 passes for 22 yards and one interception. The Panthers’ offense is as weak as ever, and Young is at the heart of the problem. The signing of Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis, the transfer of Diontae Johnson, the signing of Xavier Legette and the appointment of Dave Canales as head coach in Carolina were just band-aids that cannot solve the irreparable problem of Bryce Young.

For a new regime that is paying close attention to talent evaluation, Andy Dalton could be the best option on offense. The veteran quarterback can at least stand confidently in an NFL pocket and throw passes deep to his receivers.

The Panthers didn’t do anything wrong when they signed Young in 2023. The former Heisman Trophy winner was considered a surefire pick at the top of his draft class because of his accuracy and off-the-field qualities. None of those traits have translated into NFL success, and for the future of the franchise’s weapons like Legette, Ja’Tavion Sanders, and evaluating Dave Canales’ coaching skills, Andy Dalton is the right man for the job.
