Should the Commanders make a splash in free agency with a big name just before the final cuts?

The Washington Commanders appear to be one of those teams that will make waves in the lead-up to Week 1 of final cuts.

Finally, Washington went through a massive upheaval at the start of the Dan Quinn era, which included major roster changes, including the trading of former first-round picks that left players “speechless” during interviews.

Therefore, it is only logical that the Commanders will sign more talent after the last few release letters, either via the waiver list or through free agency.

A typical example: Bleacher Report has suggested the Commanders sign edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue:

“Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the eight-year veteran has recorded at least eight sacks in every season in which he has played at least 15 games.”

Ngakoue has been a bit of an itinerant player since his time in Jacksonville, but 69 sacks in 123 games are hard to ignore, and in 2022 alone he managed another 9.5 in 15 games.

With a former first-round pass rusher firmly on the Commanders’ waiting list at the time of this writing, adding more depth makes sense. Ngakoue is the kind of no-brainer that fits that idea too, signing him late in the process as a low-risk, high-potential rotation player.

While the Commanders already have some interesting backups like Dante Folwer Jr. behind big names like Daron Payne, someone like rookie Jer’Zhan Newton continues to struggle with injuries and besides, there really is no such thing as too many good pass rushers on an NFL roster these days.
