Four people were killed and at least 18 injured in a shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday evening, police said.

Police said officers responded to reports of a serious shooting. “Officers are on scene where multiple people have been shot and there may be multiple victims,” ​​Birmingham police wrote in a post to X.

The shooting occurred shortly after 11 p.m. in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South in the Five Points South entertainment district, police said in a later statement.

“When officers arrived on scene, they observed two adult males and one adult female lying unconscious on a sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds,” police said. All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services.

More victims were found in the area, while others were taken to local hospitals. One man was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital, police said.

According to police, there were a total of 22 gunshot victims by Sunday morning – four dead and 18 injured, “with injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to life-threatening.”

“We believe multiple suspects fired shots at a large group of people who were outdoors in a public area in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South,” the police statement said.

“Investigators believe the shooting was not random, but rather an isolated incident in which several victims were caught in the crossfire.”

Police said they are trying to identify the target of the shooting, but no one is currently in custody.

Birmingham police are cooperating with the FBI and ATF in the investigation, the police statement said. Authorities are also seeking information from witnesses.

“There is no greater resource than the public,” Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said, according to ABC News Birmingham affiliate WBMA. “We will do everything in our power to make sure that we track down, identify and bring to justice whoever is responsible for the attacks on our people this morning.”
