“Shogun” wins award for outstanding drama series and sets new Emmy Award record

Shogun proved its staying power on Sunday night with a record-breaking 18 Emmy Awards, including one for Outstanding Drama Series.

A year after the category was frequently nominated, long-standing stars such as Consequence, The Crown, Better call SaulAnd Yellow Jacketsjust one of this year’s nominees — The Crown — was already nominated for the most outstanding drama series. The other nominated dramas either had a celebrated first season behind them (Mr and Mrs Smith, Stand out, 3 Body solutionAnd Shogun) or finally getting a well-deserved Emmy award (Slow horses, The Gilded AgeAnd The morning show).

On Emmy Night it was ultimately Shogun that has prevailed. Shogun — an adaptation of James Clavell’s historical novel about an Englishman in 17th-century Japan and the basis of an acclaimed 1980 miniseries — received a record-breaking 25 nominations at this year’s Primetime Emmys and had already won 14 of them before Sunday’s main event. The series won four more, breaking the record previously held by the 2008 HBO miniseries. John Adamswho won 13 awards at the time.

However, the category “Outstanding Drama Series” should not be one of these 25 nominations: Originally announced as a limited series, the success and popularity of the series Shogun Instead, he convinced the producers to start working on new seasons based on Clavell’s original story, which ShogunEligibility to upgrade the series from the Outstanding Miniseries category to the Outstanding Drama Series category, where it won.

In addition to Outstanding Drama Series, Shōgun is the second non-English language series to be nominated in this category, after Squid Game — also received nominations for actors Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira. Sanada and Sawai both won their categories on Sunday night.
