“Shōgun” wins 18 Emmys: What you should know about the exciting series

“Shōgun” is the undisputed star on television.

The FX series, a historical drama set in feudal Japan that also streamed on Hulu, entered the 76th Emmy Awards with 25 nominations and had the most nominations of any show this year at the Creative Arts Emmys and Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, and won more awards than any other show, with 18 trophies.

Here’s everything you need to know about Shōgun, from its standout night at the Emmys to where to stream it.

In which Emmy categories did “Shōgun” win?

“Shōgun,” based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell, swept the night’s top awards at the 76th Emmy Awards, taking home the awards for Best Drama Series and Best Directing in a Drama Series.

Two of its stars also won Emmy gold on Sunday evening: Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai were named Best Actor in a Drama Series and Best Actress in a Drama Series, respectively.

Most of the show’s Emmy awards — 14, to be exact — were given out at the Creative Arts Emmys, which took place the weekend before the Primetime Emmy Awards.

These wins included a gold statuette for another cast member, Néstor Carbonell, who won in the category “Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.”

How did the “Shōgun” cast react to their victories?

In his acceptance speech, Sanada called “Shōgun” a “dream project where East meets West” and shared what he learned from working on the project – both as an actor and as a producer.

“When people work together, we can achieve miracles,” he said. “Together, we can create a better future.”

Sawai gave a tearful acceptance speech in which she thanked her co-stars and sent a loving greeting to her mother.

“Mom, I love you. You are the reason I am here. You showed me stoicism and that’s how I was able to portray Mariko,” she said of her character, dedicating her victory to “all women who expect nothing and continue to be a role model for everyone.”

How does the new “Shōgun” compare to its predecessor at the Emmys?

The 1980 miniseries “Shōgun,” each episode of which aired five nights in a row, received a total of 14 Emmy nominations and won three awards at the 1981 ceremony.

It won the awards for outstanding miniseries, as well as outstanding costume design for a series and outstanding graphic design and title sequences.

Three of the miniseries nominations included best actor nominations: Toshiro Mifune, Yoko Shimada and John Rhys-Davies for the same roles played by Sanada, Sawai and Carbonell in the 2024 series.

How do I stream “Shōgun”?

The complete first season of “Shōgun,” 10 episodes of which aired between February and April 2024, is now available to stream on Hulu and Disney+.

Will there be a second season of “Shōgun”?

Although “Shōgun” was originally announced as a miniseries, the success of the new incarnation—which resonated with critics and fans alike even before the Emmys—prompted FX to announce in May that it was working on “extending the saga for two more seasons.”

The 76th Emmy Awards are now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.

Disney is the parent company of Hulu, ABC News and Good Morning America.
