Sharp increase in car break-ins near Cincinnati Open

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – The Cincinnati Open draws tennis fans from across the country, and police say there’s been an increase in car break-ins.

“This was the third time hotels in the area have been hit this month,” said Lt. Brian Payne of the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.

Guests of two hotels in Deerfield Township found a parking lot with smashed car windows on Tuesday morning.

“Fifteen cars between the two hotels had their windows smashed and ransacked,” Payne said.

Thieves targeted properties in the immediate vicinity of Mason Montgomery Road and stole some cash.

“They rummaged through the glove compartments and center consoles,” Payne said.

Payne said the car owners dealing with the damage are in town for the Cincinnati Open, which is taking place just minutes away.

“The increased traffic generated by the country music concert and tennis tournament in the area has made it an even more popular destination,” Payne said.

He said thieves are looking for places where they can get in and out quickly.

“The location of the hotels relative to 71. (They are) right on the access ramp, which also made them a good destination,” Payne said.

Lt. Payne warned people in the area to be sure to use a safe, which most hotels have. He also said to check where the security cameras are and where the well-lit areas in the parking lot are. Those are the areas where you should park your car.

“Hide any electronic wires or anything that might give the impression that there are electronics in the vehicle,” Payne said.

Payne said officers patrol in a way that is not so obvious.

“We’ve increased patrols in that area in a variety of ways, from marked units to undercover officers to bike patrols – all different ways to combat this,” Payne said.

The search for the person responsible continues. If you have any information, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at (513)-352-3040.
