Jimmy Garoppolo is the No. 2 quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, but that doesn’t mean the former 49ers signal caller is playing a big role in preparing his team for Sunday’s game at SoFi Stadium.

While Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur believes Garoppolo’s knowledge of San Francisco’s organization gives LA a boost, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan downplayed the importance of the information his former quarterback can provide, instead being more interested in the insights of former 49ers passing game coordinator LaFleur.

“I think it’s being blown way out of proportion,” Shanahan told reporters on Friday. “I mean, a little bit more from Mike LaFleur. That started last year. But no, not that much.”

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, LaFleur praised Garoppolo’s contribution in helping the Rams’ game plan.

“Probably more between Jimmy and Matthew (Stafford), maybe even just in the locker room in general,” LaFleur said. “When you’ve been in the locker room and you’ve had the success that Jimmy has had in that locker room, you always get a little more information. I’m sure there are some things that I’m not told and things like that. But just having Jimmy back now is great and a benefit.”

Garoppolo spent parts of six seasons with the 49ers, compiling a 38-17 record in 55 starts.

It remains to be seen if Garoppolo’s information about the 49ers will make a difference in Sunday’s game, but it’s clear that Shanahan isn’t letting it bother him.
