Severe weather warning until 7 p.m.

A severe weather warning is in effect for eastern New Mexico and areas further north into Colorado until 7:00 p.m. MDT.

Storms have already formed east of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range and are moving further east into an unstable environment. Wind shear and instability will cause semi-discrete storm clusters and the occasional supercell to persist for several hours this afternoon and evening.

The main danger from today’s storms is damaging winds of up to 70 mph (110 km/h). However, hailstones the size of ping-pong balls and one or two weak tornadoes cannot be ruled out, as some storms could be supercells (storms with rotating updrafts).

Flash flooding will also be less of a problem if storms cause heavy rainfall of up to 2.5–5 cm/hour.

The storms are expected to weaken overnight as they move through the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. Severe weather fears should end shortly after 10 p.m. CDT.

On Wednesday, a slight risk of severe weather is expected east of the dry line in the southeastern half of the Texas Panhandle. These storms mainly pose a risk of wind with the small possibility of large hail and a landspout.
