Severe storms may bring a variety of weather hazards tonight

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – The weather in Western Wisconsin has been more changeable today, and more thunderstorms are expected tonight that may become severe. A cold front will move into the state later this evening, and favorable conditions for severe storms will develop over the next few hours. Temperatures have risen above 80 degrees and the dew point is above 59 degrees. This has caused moderate instability. Additionally, favorable winds will increase wind shear in the region, which may result in tornado threats and heavy hail for at least the first few hours of storm formation. After that, storms are expected to take on more of a line formation, with the main threat coming from gusty winds. If you plan to be out and about during the evening, you’ll want to have a way to get weather alerts and keep an eye on the weather. These storms will also likely be accompanied by heavy downpours, so localized flooding is possible, especially in areas with poor drainage. Due to this severe weather threat, our weather team has declared a “First Alert” weather day for this evening from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for most of western Wisconsin until 10 p.m. Any storms should move out of the area after that period, leading to a quieter night with areas of fog into early Friday morning. The warmer weather will continue for a few more days before temperatures start to drop again later this weekend as we transition into fall.
