Several schools cordoned off due to threats

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (WMC) – Several schools in the Mid-South were locked down Wednesday morning due to threats.

Germantown and Southwind high schools were locked down.

“We are aware of the threat and current lockdown at Germantown High School. Officers are working with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Homeland Security to determine the legitimacy of the threat. We have a large contingent of personnel at the school and will remain on site out of an abundance of caution,” Germantown High School officials wrote on social media.

Action News 5 crews also saw police officers outside Southwind High on Wednesday morning.

Action News 5 has received multiple reports of schools being locked down due to similar threats.

“We are aware of the threat to several of our schools. As a precaution, please do not attend your child’s school as law enforcement is actively investigating. We will keep you updated as needed,” MSCS said on social media.

Parents were also sent a text message informing them that safety measures had been taken.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office also released an online statement. “This morning, multiple threats were made against several Memphis Shelby County schools in Memphis and unincorporated Shelby County. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with Memphis Shelby County Schools and local law enforcement, is committed to ensuring the safety of all students and staff. We ask that parents do not pick up their children from schools while we investigate these threats. Your cooperation is appreciated.”

We will update this story if any arrests are made.
