Serious accident with injuries on I-40 WB at the University

Albuquerque –

The Albuquerque Police Department, Albuquerque Fire Rescue and other local police agencies responded to an accident on I-40 Westbound at University around 7:15 a.m. The APD’s Traffic X account also provided a report on this accident this morning.

According to a bystander stuck in traffic, one of the vehicles involved was an SUV, which reportedly sustained significant damage. Another person driving past the scene of the accident stated that the SUV was facing the opposite direction of traffic. They also said that a door on the SUV was reportedly missing. At the time of this post, the accident appears to have occurred in the right lane, with police and “assistance trucks” blocking the right lanes.

If you are still commuting to work at this time and need to take I-40 WB near the university, you should look for an alternative route.

Please note the updates published below.

UPDATE:

At 9:41 a.m. the right lanes are still closed, as seen in the third photo.

A passerby reported that he believed the accident was fatal. The ongoing lane closures may be due to police investigating an accident with serious injuries that could have resulted in death.

UPDATE 2:

Unfortunately, the NMDOT cameras were relocated/repositioned at 10:17 a.m., so we are no longer able to determine if the right lanes are still blocked.

We have reached out to authorities to see if they can provide us with any updated information on this crash.

UPDATE 3:

We received a response from Lt. Jason Fejer of the Albuquerque Fire Department. He stated that the accident was classified as a high torque car crash with a confirmed entrapment. However, Lt. Fejer was unable to provide any update or details on the condition of the person in the vehicle.
