Series preview: Red-Hot Mets finish home game against Cincinnati

The New York Mets (76-64) are now in the home stretch of the season, so every game is very important. Their next task will be to prevail at home against the Cincinnati Reds (68-73), who have won four games in a row. The margin for error is very small, and winning the games they are supposed to win will be crucial in the race for a playoff spot.

Before we get to the upcoming series, let’s take a look at what happened earlier this week.

Mets extend winning streak to seven with victory over Boston

It seems the Mets are hitting their stride at the most important time of the year. Their winning streak continued this week, winning each of their three games against the Boston Red Sox. The Mets kept their offense under control, allowing a total of six runs in the entire series. With the National League race remaining tight until the end, any slip-up could prove costly. The Mets didn’t let up, showing their dominance against another team fighting for the playoffs. With their second straight sweep, the Mets have the longest active winning streak in baseball.

What’s it about?

The race for the National League wild card has changed significantly in the last week. Seven days ago, the Mets were three games out of last place. But that gap has quickly disappeared, as the Mets are now tied with the Braves on Friday. In addition to minding their own business, the Mets have gotten help elsewhere. The team has not only caught up with Atlanta, but has also narrowed the gap on the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres. The Mets are now 2 1/2 games behind the Diamondbacks and three behind the Padres.

Despite what their overall record might suggest, the Reds are coming into this series full of confidence. They beat the first-place Houston Astros in three games, winning 1-0 on Thursday afternoon. The Reds’ playoff hopes are nil, but the motivation to finish above .500 and be a spoiler is still there. The Mets will not see any of their top three starters, Andrew Abbott, Hunter Greene And Nick Lodolo are all on the injured list. Nevertheless, this weekend series will put the Mets to the test.
