SERBIA 0:0 SPAIN – REPORT
A wasteful Spain failed to give the defending champions a winning start to their UEFA Nations League campaign, as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Serbia in Belgrade.
It took a while for the game to come to life, but it finally happened late in the first half when Nico Williams fired a shot over the bar and Ayoze Perez forced Predrag Rajkovic into a good save.
At the other end, Luka Jovic should have scored the first goal when he missed from close range before Veljko Birmancevic was denied by David Raya.
After the break, things continued in a similar way: Spain dominated the game and repeatedly created chances, but then lost momentum in the penalty area.
Lamal had the most chances to score but missed several, while Williams and substitute Alex Grimaldo were also eliminated and Serbia earned an impressive point.
RONALDO MAKES HISTORY FOR PORTUGAL
The other match in League A4 was between Denmark and Switzerland, which the hosts won 2-0 in Copenhagen.
San Marino also had a great result. For the first time in TWENTY (!) years, the team managed to win. They beat Athletics 1-0.
90+5′ FULL TIME SERBIA 0-0 SPAIN
And then the final whistle sounds. We didn’t respect the result, but Serbia deserves a lot of credit for winning the point. They defended brilliantly.
You have forced a corner but can’t do anything with it
90+1′ THREE MINUTES OF EXTRA TIME
Surprisingly, we are still 0-0 and if Serbia holds on, it would be an important point for them.
Stefan Mitrovic comes on for Ilic
83′ JOSELU DIRECTLY INTO ACTION
We know from history that he likes to score goals as a substitute, but this time he heads Grimaldo’s cross over the bar.
Joselu and Ferran Torres come on for Olmo and Williams
Nicol Williams heads in a cross from Carvajal in the penalty area, but Rajkovic is there again
79′ SPAIN KEEPS THE BALL
The visitors have had 74% possession and 18 shots on goal, but only four of them have been on target so far.
He replaces Ruiz in Spain
The young star tries again from a similar position in the penalty area. This time he tests Rajkovic, but the goalkeeper parries
Will Spain find a way to start the Nations League with a win?
Yamal tries his luck from the penalty area, but his shot goes past the far post
The substitute at least asks the goalkeeper to intervene, but that is all, because his shot is blocked.
69′ AND NOW YELLOW FOR SERBIA
Belic sees the yellow card after the Spanish international for a bad tackle on Yamal
Not a great tackle from the Spanish international, he gets a yellow card
68′ CAN SPAIN FIND A WAY THROUGH?
They will be disappointed with their performance so far, but there is no doubt that they are the team with the upper hand at the moment.
Spain tries to increase the pressure, but Ruiz sees his efforts as a Serbian player and jumps to safety
62′ ANOTHER CHANCE BEGINS
Le Normand cannot convert from a corner as he misses the goal. These chances add up
59′ NEDELJKOVIC MISSES THE TARGET
If it had gone in, it would have been a stunning goal. A remarkable counterattack from the Serbians, starting near their own box and involving some great one-on-one contact and multiple players. They worked their way into the Spanish half and then into the box, but Nedeljkovic was unable to test the goalkeeper.
Cucurella and Perez are missing, Oyarzabal and Grimaldo come
54′ SPAIN DICTATES THE PACE
Similar to the first half, Spain has a lot of possession. The Spanish almost play with Serbia, passing the ball back and forth, but their opponents are not tempted into making rash moves.
51′ CARVAJAL COMES CLOSE!
A huge chance for Spain when Yamal fires a well-disguised free kick into the box just as he looked like he was going to shoot. He passes to Carvajal but the defender’s shot flies over the bar.
Serbia win a free kick on the edge of the box following a foul by Laporte. Ilic takes the ball but can’t bend it enough to curl it onto the right side of the post.
And then Spain starts the second half
Jan-Carlo Simic comes on for Erakovic at half-time
MBAPPE REJECTS CRITICISM
45+1′ HALF TIME: SERBIA 0-0 SPAIN
There were many chances as the half progressed, but neither goalkeeper was beaten yet. Serbia were probably the luckier of the two teams.
45+1′ ONE MINUTE OF EXTRA TIME
Not much extra time, but we are there
Perhaps this tackle by Yamal alarmed his opponents, because he is quickly mowed down by Birmancevic, who also receives a yellow card for his efforts.
That’s a pretty bad tackle from Yamal, who chases Pavlovic, charges at the Serb and brings him down from behind. Unsurprisingly, he receives a yellow card for it.
40′ CAN SPAIN BREAK THE DEADLINE?
With halftime approaching and after a hectic five minutes, Spain are starting to regain some of their momentum, but can they find a way to break through this resilient defence?
37′ RUIZ SHOOTS OFF THE GOAL
Now the chances are piling up! Nice move by Williams, who sets up Ruiz, but the shot from close range to the far post goes just wide of the goal.
A good save by the Spanish goalkeeper, who bends to the right to save Veljko Burmancevic’s shot
Oh my God! Jovic has just missed a dream goal. The ball lands at him after a back pass from Andrija Zikovic. He is one-on-one on goal and somehow misses the target, shooting wide of the far post. They may live to regret that.
A superb reaction from Serbian goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic keeps Ayoze Perez at bay as the striker’s first shot from near the penalty spot is deflected into the goal.
And another shot from outside the penalty area, this time from Fabian Ruiz, which flies over the bar.
30′ WILLIAMS HITS HIGH AND FAR
The striker comes in from the left and aims for the far corner, but doesn’t have his radar properly in view and his shot goes wide.
27′ YELLOW CARD FOR CARVAJAL
The defender receives a yellow card for a body check against Pavlovic
27′ CAN SPAIN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MOMENTUM?
The guests currently have the upper hand, the game is mainly taking place in the Serbian half. However, they are currently unable to find a way through
This is the first shot on goal of the game, but it is quite harmless, as Zubimendi aims low and slowly straight at the goalkeeper from just outside the penalty area.
21′ CARVAJAL VOLLEYS OVER
A cross from Nico Williams is cleared to the edge of the box, from where Dani Carvajal tries his luck and hits the falling ball with a direct shot with his right foot, but the ball flies just over
A few nervous moments for the Serbian defense as Marc Cucurella and Olmo sent nasty crosses into the box, but both were saved.
It was an impressive start for the hosts. They have a solid defense and do not want to sit back
And then comes the first chance of the game, and it’s for Serbia. Luka Jovic is played in from the left after a cross, but his shot from the edge of the box goes over the bar.
11′ SPAIN PUSHES FORWARD
Olmo bypasses Serbia’s full-back defence for the first time, but cannot find a teammate with his cross
Spain certainly has more possession and has also had a few fouls, but so far neither goalkeeper has been put to the test.
Well, Serbian Strahinja Erakovic will be walking a tightrope for the rest of the game. He gets a yellow card for a bad foul on Dani Olmo
As for this game, it is played in League A4. The other two teams in this group are Denmark and Switzerland, who face each other tonight in Copenhagen.
Amazingly, this is only the second time these two nations have met. The last time, in 2012, Spain won 2-0 thanks to goals from Adrian Lopez and Santi Cazorla.
Spain have reached the last two Nations League finals, losing to France in 2021 before beating Croatia on penalties to win the trophy in 2023.
Serbia’s history in the competition is not quite as glorious. They have been promoted to Division A for the first time this season, which is uncharted territory.
