Applied Magic Producer Denise Di Novi has spoken out about the upcoming sequel to the 1998 romantic fantasy film. Although the film initially received mixed reviews, it went on to become a cult classic among fans due to its timely themes.
In a recent interview with People, Di Novi assured: Magical Sisters 2 would honor the legacy and themes of the original film while giving fans something different to enjoy. She stressed that the sequel’s creative team is determined to keep the things that people loved about the first installment. “I think the big mistake people make with sequels is when they want to reinvent the wheel and be totally original and surprise people by making it different or whatever,” Di Novi said. “(The team) understands how important the first film is for so many people, especially women, and We definitely want to acknowledge that.”

She continued: “There is a certain joy in this film, and there is so beautiful themes like sisterhood and family and acceptance, tolerance, love. The title alone, which Alice Hoffman, the great author, came up with and which has now become the vernacular of “practical magic,” says that there is magic in everyday life, in love, in family, in sisterhood. It is magical, and we all have our gifts, and women have very special and specific gifts. We really want to appreciate all this.”
When does filming for “I Dream of Sisters 2” start?
Magical Sisters 2 is being written by Oscar-winning author Akiva Goldsman, who also co-wrote the screenplay for the first film. According to Di Novi, the production team hopes to shoot the film next year as they are “accelerating” its development. The story is based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel, The Book of Magicthe fourth part of her book series “Magic Sisters”. In addition to Goldsman and Di Novi, Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman will also be back in the sequel, reprising their respective roles as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens. Bullock and Kidman are not only the main actors again, but have also signed on as producers.
