Semi-trailer catches fire in Indiantown after ramming Amtrak train with 86 people on board

A semi-trailer truck caught fire in Indiantown Thursday morning after colliding with an Amtrak train carrying more than 80 people.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR) responded to a passenger train accident at SW Amaryllis Avenue and SW Warfield Boulevard at 10:30 a.m. Firefighters reported finding the cab of the semi-truck engulfed in flames.

According to the sheriff’s office, there were a total of 86 people on board the train – 72 passengers and 14 crew members.

Fortunately, no one was injured, MCFR reported.

In addition, the driver of the semi-truck was also able to escape the collision and suffered only minor injuries. The sheriff’s office learned that the semi-truck was attempting to cross the tracks when it was struck by the oncoming train.

The train passengers remain on the train until another train arrives at the scene of the accident and they can transfer.

Delays are expected in the area. One lane is open on Warfield Boulevard and MCSO continues to investigate the scene. The Amaryllis Avenue intersection on the railroad line is the only road currently closed, fire officials said.
