Secret Service’s new plan to protect Trump at outdoor rallies

The US Secret Service has approved a new security plan that will enable the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to continue holding outdoor rallies after the attack he escaped last July. A federal agency official confirmed this to The Washington Post, saying the agency would use bulletproof glass to protect the tycoon at outdoor events. The official told the newspaper that the procedure was “a significant improvement over the Secret Service’s standard security planning for candidates’ campaign rallies.” In fact, the use of bulletproof glass, if deemed necessary for outdoor events, is normally reserved for presidents and vice presidents.

To better protect Trump, the Secret Service has begun placing the material and bulletproof glass in various locations across the country, the official said. The Secret Service will also deploy other “technical security tools not typically provided to presidential candidates,” the official said, without providing further details. Trump survived an assassination attempt on July 13 during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Afterward, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general launched an investigation into the handling of security at the rally by the Secret Service, the federal agency responsible for protecting presidents and former presidents.

A brief note on the inspector general’s website said the goal of the investigation was to “evaluate the process the U.S. intelligence community followed to secure former President Trump’s July 13, 2024, campaign rally,” during which an assassination attempt took place. No date for the start of the investigation was given. The president Joe Biden had already ordered an independent review of the safety precautions taken for the rally.

In particular, the question remains open as to how the twenty-year-old perpetrator of the shooting, Thomas Matthew Crooksmanaged to climb a building and open fire on Trump and rally attendees. In a July 16 interview with CNN, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said her agency was “solely responsible” for implementing and enforcing security measures, and confirmed that none of the resources allocated for the event were used for other events. “At this particular location, we have divided responsibilities, but the Secret Service is fully responsible for the design and execution of the device,” Cheatle said. In another interview with ABC News, Cheatle said the agency was aware of the building’s security vulnerabilities. “This particular building has a sloped roof at its highest point, so there is a security factor that has to be taken into account. The decision was made to secure the building from the inside,” she said.
