The Secret Service has begun to reinforce Donald Trump’s security personnel and plans to surround the former president with bulletproof glass at campaign rallies.

A senior official told CNN that the additional security measures included an increase in the number of agents and certain technical changes, but the official declined to provide further details for security reasons.

The measures are being implemented in the wake of the assassination attempt on Trump at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania last month. Some of the measures have already been implemented.

Bulletproof glass is often used to protect sitting presidents and is transported to the location by the Department of Defense, which has an extensive transportation operation that includes aircraft.

On Trump’s behalf, the Secret Service will strategically place the glass across the country in areas Trump is expected to visit, since the agency does not have its own aircraft, the official told CNN.

A team of dedicated agents will be responsible for implementing and preparing the new measures for each campaign event in the run-up to the November 2024 presidential election.

“From a logistical perspective, this is a massive undertaking,” the official told CNN.

Some of these measures had been previously announced by Secret Service leadership, including the Trump staffing increase that Kimberly Cheatle announced before she resigned as agency director last month amid intense criticism following the rally shooting.

Outdoor events generally use bulletproof glass, while indoor events usually do not require such a measure as people are screened before entering. The official told CNN that the glass could be used both indoors and outdoors, depending on the security situation at each venue.

The Secret Service declined to comment on the new measures.

“The safety of our protected persons is our highest priority,” a spokesperson told CNN. “For security reasons, we cannot comment on specific protective measures and methods.”
