Secret Service quietly places five officers on leave as election campaign continues after Trump assassination

According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, the Secret Service quietly placed at least five officers on leave in the weeks following the July 13 assassination attempt on Donald Trump. The leave appears to have been in response to inadequate security at the Butler rally, which resulted in a shooting that injured Trump’s ear and left one man dead.

According to CBS News, in addition to the head of the Pittsburgh field office, at least three officials from that office and a member of the former president’s staff were also placed on leave.

The decision, which was not confirmed to be a disciplinary measure, came at a time when the shooting – once seen as a decisive factor in the election – was increasingly taking a back seat in the election campaign.

There was no comment on the shooting at the Democratic National Convention, and any slight gains in Trump’s poll numbers have long since been wiped out by other massive upheavals in the race, including the withdrawal of President Joe Biden.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned last month after testifying before the House Oversight Committee about the security lapses that allowed Thomas Matthew Crooks to shoot the former president from an unsecured rooftop just 400 feet from his campaign rally stage.

The shooting at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, was described as a massive security lapse. The FBI later took over the investigation, while the Secret Service’s Internal Affairs Division continued its investigation.

Although Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi did not confirm the suspensions and told CBS that the agency would not comment on individuals, he confirmed that agents are held to “the highest professional standards” and that disciplinary action could be taken if a policy violation is found.

Trump, who returned Wednesday for his first outdoor rally since the shooting, made no mention of the striking, newly installed bulletproof glass that stood between him and the crowd.
