Secret Service apologizes after unauthorized entry into Pittsfield salon, officials say

The United States Secret Service is apologizing to a Pittsfield business owner after a camera caught agents entering her salon without permission.

Surveillance video shows someone grabbing a chair and taping over the camera in what appears to be a bathroom break during a July 27 fundraiser for Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign at the historic Colonial Theater in downtown Pittsfield.

The back of the theater is just steps from the Four One Three Salon.

Alicia Powers, the owner of Four One Three Salon, reportedly closed her business for the day and felt violated after the incident.

A US intelligence spokesman said in a statement:

“The U.S. Secret Service works closely with our partners in the business community in conducting our protective and investigative missions. The Secret Service has since been in contact with the business owner involved. We value these relationships highly and our personnel would not enter a business or direct our partners to enter such a business without the owner’s permission.”

According to Business Insider, the head of the Secret Service’s Boston field office called Powers and apologized.

“I personally called and spoke with the owner of the business. She was absolutely thrilled with the Pittsfield Police Department and our tremendous help throughout the entire process,” said Thomas Dawley, Pittsfield Police Chief.

The secret service contacted her and apologized for any misunderstanding or inconvenience.

Dawley says that despite this incident, the event was a great success from a police perspective.

However, a high price now awaits the city.

“It cost my department about $30,000 to $31,000 in officer overtime,” said Chief Dawley. “My special events budget is usually around $60,000, so that’s a little over half of my budget for an unplanned event.”

According to the Pittsfield Mayor’s Office, the event cost the city just over $50,000.

Pittsfield Police Department $28,000

Pittsfield Fire Department $5,788.96

Department of Public Services $16,522.83

The mayor’s office adds that the mayor has contacted the Harris campaign team and has not received a response regarding the refund.

“Maybe we can do it, we can adapt, overcome the situation and make the best of it,” Dawley said. “I would like to see the campaign receive some kind of compensation, but in reality that doesn’t look very promising.”

The mayor’s office is currently working on submitting invoices to the DNC and the Harris campaign team.
