Secret Service allegedly broke into Massachusetts salon to use restroom during Kamala Harris event, agency responds

The Secret Service reportedly apologized to a Massachusetts salon owner who claimed some people broke into her business to use the restroom while the Secret Service was conducting security for a nearby Kamala Harris fundraiser. Berkshires businesswoman Alicia Powers claimed someone picked the lock and then broke into her business to use the restroom. This happened after a Secret Service agent covered a camera outside her salon with tape.

Two people in paramedic uniforms, one person in camouflage clothing and another in a dark suit and white shirt used the restroom, Powers said. A Secret Service representative assured that agents never break into buildings in this way. The representative did not deny, however, that an officer had covered the camera with tape. This action was even captured on surveillance video.

“Our staff would not enter a business or instruct our partners to enter one without the owner’s permission.”

“The Secret Service has since communicated with the business owner involved. We value these relationships highly and our personnel would not enter a business or direct our partners to enter one without the owner’s permission,” Secret Service spokeswoman Melissa McKenzie said, according to the New York Post.

According to Business Insider, Powers said the head of the Secret Service’s Boston field office called her and apologized. “He told me everything that was done was completely wrong,” Powers said. “They shouldn’t have intercepted my camera without permission. They shouldn’t have entered the building without permission.”

The shop owner owns the Four One Three Salon in Pittsfield. The incident reportedly occurred on July 27, ahead of the U.S. vice president’s first major in-person fundraiser after Joe Biden ended his candidacy and endorsed her. The salon is located behind the Colonial Theater, where Harris’ event was held.

The owner said her salon was closed ahead of the fundraiser because of the security chaos. “They had a lot of people here again, coming in and out, clearing a few bombs – they completely understand what they have to do, given the nature of the situation,” she said. “And at that point, my team felt like it was a little bit chaotic and we just made the decision to close on Saturday.”

Powers said a Secret Service agent covered a Ring security camera in the salon with tape early in the morning. “For about an hour and a half, there were multiple people coming in and out — they were just using my bathroom, the alarms were going off, they were using my counter, without permission,” Powers said. “And then when they were done using the bathroom for two hours, they left and left my building completely unlocked and didn’t remove the tape from the camera.”

“Whoever was visiting, whether they were a celebrity or not, I probably would have opened the door and made them coffee and brought in doughnuts to give them a great afternoon,” she added. “But they didn’t even have the audacity to ask permission. They just helped themselves.”

Power claimed that an emergency services worker later told her that a Secret Service officer in charge “told people to come in and use the restroom.”

This incident occurred a few days after Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at his rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service was then subjected to massive criticism for failing to secure the roof of the building from which the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire. A few days later, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle submitted her resignation.
