Seattle Mariners at bottom of standings as AL West collapse deepens

When the Seattle Mariners lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, it was the Mariners’ fifth consecutive loss. That’s the longest losing streak this season.

It was an incredibly disappointing performance on a road trip full of such losses. Five straight losses after one of the most impressive series wins of the season with a sweep of playoff contenders the New York Mets. Seattle was swept by the Detroit Tigers and lost a series to the Pirates, with another game scheduled for Sunday.

Detroit has been at or near the bottom of the American League Central throughout the season, and Pittsburgh was in last place in the National League Central before the series against the Mariners.

That’s a far cry from mid-June, when Settle had a 10-game lead in the AL West. Looking at the Mariners’ record since then, it’s clear how far Seattle has fallen.

According to a tweet from Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, the Mariners have a record of 19-30 since June 19. That equates to a winning percentage of .388, the second-worst in the league behind the weaker Chicago White Sox.

There’s another stat that makes that stat even worse. According to ROOT Sports’ pregame broadcast on Saturday, the Mariners have an 8-19 record against teams with a losing record since June 19.

There’s no good reason Seattle should lose so many games to bad teams. And yet, here we are. The Mariners are 3.5 games back in the AL West and have more than four games left to stay in the last spot in the AL Wild Card standings. After their win over the Pirates on Sunday, they face a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It’s a pessimistic time in Seattle right now. There are 38 games left – the ship needs to be brought back on course now or it risks hitting the iceberg.
