Seahawks smother the Dolphins 24-3 and improve to 3-0

For only the eighth time in franchise history – and the first since 2020 – the Seattle Seahawks started the season 3-0 by defeating the Miami Dolphins 24-3 at Lumen Field. It was a pretty sloppy, penalty-ridden affair from both teams, but in the end the Seahawks took care of a team missing their two best quarterbacks.

Seattle scored 17 points in the first quarter, scoring on three of its first four possessions. But after that, the fireworks clearly went out. The next six possessions went like this:

  • Missed field goal

  • punt

  • punt

  • punt

  • punt

  • punt

  • Intercept

The Seahawks finally managed to break through and tie the game early in the fourth quarter. Seattle, stuck at its own two-yard line (more on how they got there in a moment), managed a 98-yard run in 11 plays, capped off with a 10-yard run by running back Zach Charbonnet. It wasn’t a standout performance by the Seahawks, but their offense did more than enough to take advantage of the defense’s stellar day.

Why did the Seahawks have to go 98 yards? Because the defense stopped Miami on fourth down at the two-yard line. In fact, it was the second time Seattle had prevented the Dolphins from scoring in the red zone. Macdonald’s defense smothered the life out of a severely weakened Miami team. Backup Skylar Thompson was ejected from the game, forcing backup Tim Boyle to step in. Predictably, he didn’t have much of an impact.

The Dolphins had 12 possessions. Of those 12, six ended in punts, three in turnovers, a missed field goal, a made field goal thanks to an interception that put them in the Seahawks’ red zone, and a sack to end the first half. Miami was 1-for-12 on third down and had a whopping 205 total yards on 56 plays.

Seattle maintains its top spot in the NFC West with its 3-0 record, but faces its biggest challenge of the season in Week 4. The Seahawks return to Detroit for the third straight year to play the Lions, who await them on Monday Night Football.
