Seahawks list RB Kenneth Walker III and RT George Fant as questionable

RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks have running back Kenneth Walker III and right tackle George Fant questionable for Sunday’s road game against the New England Patriots, posing a challenge for Seattle’s offense as it tries to improve its record to 2-0 under new coach Mike Macdonald.

The Seahawks will also be without outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu (knee), arguably their best defensive player, and backup tight end Pharaoh Brown (foot). Starting inside linebackers Tyrel Dodson (shoulder) and Jerome Baker (hamstring) are questionable, according to the team, although Baker practiced in a limited capacity all week and Dodson became a full participant on Friday.

On Saturday, the Seahawks signed running back George Holani and tackle/guard McClendon Curtis from their practice squad for Sunday’s game.

Walker went down in apparent pain at the end of a run in the fourth quarter of the Seahawks’ season-opening win over the Denver Broncos. He immediately pointed to his side and did not return. It was initially reported as abdominal pain, but has since been determined to be an oblique abdominal muscle injury.

Fant, who is filling in at right tackle while Abe Lucas remains on the physically unable to perform list, injured his knee after 13 plays. He had to be carried off the field and was quickly ruled out.

When asked about his injury after the game, Walker told reporters, “I’m fine.” Macdonald also said after the game that the team was optimistic that Walker was OK, but neither he nor Fant had practiced this week.

“He’s feeling good,” Macdonald said of Walker on Friday. “He’s getting better, but right now it’s questionable and we’ll take it from there.”

Walker missed two games last year and most of a third, also with an oblique injury. Asked about his chances of playing Sunday, Macdonald would say, “Doubtful.” He also remained tight-lipped when asked if Fant’s or Walker’s injuries could be serious, saying, “We’re just going to let it go.”

With Walker questionable, Zach Charbonnet is expected to start. The second-year running back caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Geno Smith early in the fourth quarter against Denver, but gained just 12 yards on eight carries.

Charbonnet, who was drafted in the second round out of UCLA last year, started twice for Walker as a rookie and totaled 157 yards and one touchdown on 38 touches in those games.

“A lot of the same skill sets,” offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said of Charbonnet compared to Walker. “He’s an excellent receiver out of the backfield, he’s a very, very capable pass protector and obviously a very powerful runner, so I don’t think anything would change in the game plan if Ken wasn’t available.”

Kenny McIntosh is the Seahawks’ third running back.

Stone Forsythe replaced Fant in the opening game and finished with a 54.5% pass block win rate (six pass block wins and five pass block losses), the lowest among 64 qualified offensive tackles in Week 1. He was also penalized for a false start.

However, Seattle’s offensive line improved in the second half, allowing pressure on only 23% of Smith’s dropbacks and not allowing a single sack after the quarterback was pressured on 47% of his dropbacks in the first half and was sacked twice.

“He did a solid job,” Macdonald said of Forsythe, a fourth-year veteran. “We ended up winning the football game. He allowed a couple of pass rushes at the edge, we’ll get those under control. But he came in, we ended up winning the game, so we won football.”
