NFL: Joe D’Alessandris, who coached offensive linemen for nearly half a century and eventually made it to four NFL teams, has died. He was 70 years old.

The Baltimore Ravens, D’Alessandris’ employer since 2017, announced his death on Sunday. He was hospitalized earlier this month with an unspecified illness, prompting him to resign from his duties as the team’s offensive line coach.

• Los Angeles Rams linebacker Ernest Jones has been given permission to seek a trade amid an impasse over a contract extension, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

Jones became a mainstay of the Rams defense two seasons ago, playing alongside Bobby Wagner for a year before taking on the central role in the middle of the lineup last season. Jones led the Rams with 145 tackles last year — 51 more than second-place safety Jordan Fuller — while recording 4.5 sacks and excelling as a blitzing linebacker.

• The Miami Dolphins released quarterback Mike White, making Skylar Thompson the likely replacement for Tua Tagovailoa for the 2024 season.

Thompson appeared to secure the spot as a backup when he came on as a substitute and led two touchdown drives with 190 yards passing in Miami’s loss to Tampa Bay in the final preseason game.

• Bengals star receiver Ja’Marr Chase completed his contract extension and practiced for the first time this summer, two weeks before Cincinnati opens the season against the New England Patriots.

The Bengals posted photos on social media from a closed practice showing Chase participating in the workouts.

Chase has been watching most of the workouts but has not participated as he seeks a long-term contract extension. He is in the fourth year of his rookie deal and the Bengals have already exercised a fully guaranteed fifth-year option worth $21.8 million for 2025.

CAR RACING

INDY CAR: Will Power stayed in the race for the IndyCar championship with a lights-to-flag victory at the Portland International Raceway in Oregon.

Power started second alongside pole-sitter Santino Ferrucci, but an alliance between Team Penske and the Foyt organization allowed Power and Ferrucci to form a plan for the start. Power pushed past Ferrucci in the first corner and pulled ahead by 10 seconds over points leader Alex Palou.

One of Power’s teammates, Josef Newgarden, finished third

FORMULA 1: McLaren driver Lando Norris let his Red Bull rival Max Verstappen pass on the first lap of the Dutch Grand Prix, then regained the lead and drove to his second career victory.
