Scotland vs Poland LIVE: News, lineups and more for tonight’s Nations League

(Andrew Milligan/PA Wire)

Scotland face Poland in the opening game of their Nations League campaign at Hampden Park on Thursday night, hoping to put a summer of disappointment behind them.

With just one point, Steve Clarke’s team finished bottom of their group at Euro 2024, but despite calls for him to be sacked or resigned, Clarke is once again leading the team in a Nations League group that also includes international heavyweights Portugal and Croatia.

Scotland meets the Selection on Sunday, but first there is a friendly against the ‘easiest’ opponents in the group. Clarke has called up several players without international experience, including Ben Doak, on loan from Liverpool, and Ryan Gauld, whose only other call-up came in September 2014.

And Poland will be looking to bounce back from its similarly disappointing European Championship campaign, when it finished last in an admittedly more difficult group in Germany.

How does the Nations League work?

The competition is divided into four levels from A to D, with four groups in A, B and C and two groups in D.

Scotland plays in Group A1, the top division, while England (B2) and Wales (B4) play in the second division and Northern Ireland (C3) in the third.

The top two teams from each group in League A will play a home and away quarter-final in March, with the winners competing in the Final Four tournament in June. The winner of this mini-tournament will be the winner of the Nations League.

The group winners of Leagues B, C and D are promoted to the higher league. The teams that finish last in Leagues A and B are relegated.

The teams that finished third in their group in League A will face the runners-up in League B in home and away promotion and relegation playoffs in March – and the third-placed teams in League B will face the runners-up in League C.

In addition, play-offs will take place between the two best fourth-placed teams in League C and the two runners-up in League D.

First team news for Scotland

The absence of long-term injured players such as Kieran Tierney, Nathan Patterson and Aaron Hickey was compounded by Kilmarnock goalkeeper Robby McCrorie, Torino striker Che Adams and Celtic duo James Forrest and Greg Taylor leaving the original squad for Sunday’s Group A match against Poland and trip to Portugal.

Ryan Gauld of the Vancouver Whitecaps was called up to the squad after a ten-year absence, along with the also inexperienced Sturm Graz full-back Max Johnston and attacker Ben Doakes, who is on loan to Middlesbrough from Liverpool.

They were joined by Rangers midfielder Connor Barron, Dundee goalkeeper Jon McCracken and Sassuolo left-back Josh Doig, making the number six potential debutants.

If Scotland finish in the top two of their group, they would qualify for the quarter-finals of the Nations League, fourth place would seal relegation to League B and third place would mean a play-off match.

Although the Nations League is an event in its own right, it also impacts qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which Scotland are aiming to take part in for the first time since 1998.
