Schools on the coast close on Thursday

HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) – Several schools along the Mississippi Gulf Coast have announced they will close as Francine is expected to make landfall in Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane on Wednesday. Some schools have extended their closure from Wednesday into Thursday.

  • Hancock County School District All schools will close on Wednesday, September 11th and Thursday, September 12th.
  • Christian Collegiate Academy is closed on Wednesday, September 11th.
  • The Bay St. Louis-Waveland School District is closed on Wednesday, September 11th and Thursday, September 12th.
  • Biloxi School District All schools will close on Wednesday, September 11th and Thursday, September 12th.
  • Harrison County School District All schools will close on Wednesday, September 11th and Thursday, September 12th.
  • Pass Christian School District All schools will close on Wednesday, September 11th and Thursday, September 12th.
  • Coastal Episcopal School in Long Beach will be closed on Wednesday, September 11th and Thursday, September 12th.
  • Pascagoula-Gautier School District will be closed on Wednesday, September 11. In a press release, the district said, “The Pascagoula-Gautier School District will be closed on Thursday, September 12. All extracurricular activities are also canceled tomorrow. PGSD’s priority is the safety of our students, staff and community. We look forward to seeing students back in school Friday morning!”
  • Jackson County School District will remain closed until Thursday, September 12. “Because Hurricane Francine is not yet fully over, we have decided to cancel classes tomorrow as a precautionary measure,” the district said in a press release on Wednesday.
  • Moss Point School District will be closed Wednesday, September 11 through Thursday, September 12. Regular school district hours will resume on Friday, September 13.
  • All Schools within the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi is closed on Wednesday, September 11th and Thursday, September 12th.
  • George County School District will be closed on Wednesday, September 11th and Thursday, September 12th. Classes will resume on Friday, September 13th with the regular schedule.
  • Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College will be closed on Wednesday, September 11. All in-person classes are canceled and all campus facilities will remain closed, with the exception of the cafeteria and residence halls on the Perkinston Campus. All campuses will reopen at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 12.
  • Christian Luther School in Hurley is closed on Wednesday, September 11th.
  • Stone County School District will be closed on Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12. The school district anticipates reopening schools on Friday, September 13, but will reevaluate the situation.
  • Long Beach School District will be closed on Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12. School is expected to reopen on Friday, September 13 at regular start times.
  • William Carey University will close all locations on Wednesday, Sept. 11, including the Tradition/Biloxi, Hattiesburg and Baton Rouge campuses. All locations will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 12, with the Hattiesburg and Tradition campuses moving to online learning. WCU’s Hattiesburg and Tradition campuses will reopen normally on Friday, Sept. 13. A decision on the Baton Rouge campus will be made on Thursday, Sept. 12.
  • Ocean Springs School District is closed until Thursday, September 12. “As soon as weather conditions permit, our teams will assess our facilities and prepare them for opening on Friday,” OSSD said in a press release on Wednesday.
  • Gulfport School District is closed on Wednesday, September 11th and Thursday, September 12th.
  • The Gulf Park Campus of the University of Southern Mississippi will be closed on Wednesday, September 11. The Hattiesburg campus will transition to remote operations. On Thursday, September 12, the Hattiesburg and Gulf Park campuses will be delayed until noon.
