Schools offer more security after shooting near Laney High Stadium

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Students and parents prepare to fill the stands at Friday night’s football game.

If you remember last Friday, there was a shooting near Laney High School stadium that stopped the game last week.

The Richmond County School District says its safety plan will be fully implemented this week.

Richmond County says it has a safety plan in place for all games and events, but is not giving away too many details for safety reasons.

At Westside High School, officers are stationed throughout the area inside and outside the stadium.

The school district says it strives to have at least six officers per game.

But when you arrive at the game, keep this in mind: book bags are not allowed in the game and you will be searched.

Safety is a top priority not only in Richmond County, but in many counties throughout our area.

Burke County, for example, just implemented a clear bag policy this year and installed new metal detectors at the gates.

According to McDuffie County, children under 16 are not allowed to participate in a game without being accompanied by an adult.

Across the river in Aiken County, South Aiken High School has restricted areas around the stadium that you are not allowed to enter.

“I always tell my daughter if she hears anything, gunshots, someone screaming or whatever, to take cover. Don’t look behind you. Don’t try to get your personal belongings. Just take cover. We’ll get it all later. And then I always talk it over with her after a situation like that,” said Charmaine Cole, a Westside High parent. “It can happen anywhere, anytime. So we just have to do what we can do.”
