School districts consider banning cell phones

School districts across the United States are looking for ways to get their students to focus on class and stay off their phones. One method they use is to ban cell phone use during school hours.

On Thursday’s Fox45 Morning News, Tom Rodgers spoke with David Williams of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance. Williams says the distraction that mobile devices pose for students should be a top priority for teachers and school administrators.

“It’s critical that school districts figure this out,” Williams said, “and do it in a way that’s effective and cost-effective.”

Williams points to a method some school districts have already implemented: providing students with lockable bags that only a teacher or administrator has access to. This allows students to carry their cell phones with them, but also prevents them from using them.

“Here’s the kicker: It’s not that expensive,” Williams said. “We’re talking about $20,000 total to buy bags for these kids, and it works. School districts across the country say the kids are more focused and are playing more sports. And parents are concerned because they want their kids to have access to their phones. Well, they still have their phones, they just can’t use them during those 6 or 7 hours at school.”
