Savannah Guthrie had just returned to work on Monday after taking time off over the summer to be with her family, but on Wednesday she left the studios of the Today Show – this time for a very important assignment.
At the beginning of the broadcast on August 21, she was not sitting next to Hoda Kotb at the famous news desk, but was broadcasting live from Chicago, where she had flown overnight.
The Star was on site and reported on the recent Democratic national rally, where Barack and Michelle Obama, among others, gave speeches in support of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
Later in the show, Craig Melvin joined Hoda at the desk while Savannah continued reporting from Chicago.
Savannah spent the last week at her home in upstate New York enjoying some quality time with her children and husband Michael Feldman.
During their time off, they celebrated their daughter Vale’s tenth birthday and the star shared several photos from the celebrations on social media.
The journalist is accustomed to traveling for work and often flies overnight to cover world events both in the United States and overseas.
She has been working since Today since July 2012 and in 2022, when she celebrated her tenth anniversary on the show, her family came on air to surprise her in a special anniversary episode.
Savannah’s journey into journalism was incredibly brave. She wanted to be a lawyer, but realized that her calling was broadcasting. Before going to law school, she had originally worked in broadcasting, but ended up in the “middle market” and felt like she would never be good enough to advance.
In Brooke Shield’s podcast she tells her impressive story. What now?Savannah said, “I was in a medium-sized market and it was time to try to reach the big market,” she told Brooke.
“Honestly, I felt like I wasn’t good enough. I was scared of having to send out the tapes, I could never do your job. I couldn’t handle the rejection. I thought to myself, ‘You know what I’m going to do. I’m going to take the LSAT, see how I do, and then I’ll have this stuff in the bag. So if I don’t get a job in a bigger market, I can apply to law school. That was kind of my Plan B.’
After applying to law school, getting accepted, and getting a good job at a law firm, she felt like this wasn’t what she was meant to do.
Speaking about the moment she quit her job to follow her dreams, she said: “So I called the judge. This never happens, you don’t quit a trainee job before you start it, but I did. He said, ‘Come over and talk to me.’
“I tried to explain to him that I have this dream and that this is what I want to do and he asked me if I had a job offer. I said, ‘No, sir.’
He said, “Do you have any leads or prospects, why now?” And I said, “No, I have nothing.” “Prospects, why now?” And I said, “No, I have nothing.”
She continued: “He said, ‘I understand, it’s your dream. Why don’t you come and do this internship and then after that, it only takes a year. This experience will only enrich you.’
“And I said, ‘Judge, I know you’re right, that makes perfect sense. But I know myself, and if I don’t do it now, I’ll never have the courage to do it again.’ And so he just said, ‘Okay.'”
The rest is history, and Savannah is now one of the most famous broadcasters in the United States, thanks to her role in the Today Show.
She also has a successful career as an author and published her latest book, “Mostly What God Does,” earlier this year.
