Sarr and Johnson score as Spurs defend their Europa League win at Ferencvaros | Europa League

Brennan Johnson scored for the fifth game in a row to help young Tottenham to a hard-fought win at Ferencvaros in the Europa League.

Ange Postecoglou named four teenagers in his line-up in Budapest and it was an excellent performance from 17-year-old Mikey Moore on his full debut that gave Pape Matar Sarr the opener in the 23rd minute.

It was Sarr’s second goal of the competition and after Spurs withstood late pressure from the Hungarian champions, Johnson took the points with a left-footed shot four minutes from time.

Barnabas Varga provided a thrilling finish with his volley in the 90th minute, but Tottenham held on to the ball and secured their fifth win in a row.

Postecoglou made seven changes from the weekend’s win at Manchester United and handed academy graduates Moore and Will Lankshear their full debuts.

An intimidating atmosphere greeted the young Spurs team on the pitch and the Ferencvaros fans made a lot of noise, but the visitors calmed down after Varga sent an early effort over the goal.

The influence of Moore, who became the youngest player to play for Tottenham in the Premier League in May, began to grow with a fine dribble followed by a fine shot across goal.

Lankshear headed over a cross from Timo Werner a few minutes later before Denes Dibusz parried Sarr’s low shot after an excellent pass from Yves Bissouma.

Ferencvaros had the ball in the net in the 16th minute when Ben Davies got out of position and Adama Traoré headed in Eldar Civic’s cross. However, the decision was deemed offside and was ultimately upheld after a lengthy VAR review.

It gave the home side the lead and Postecoglou’s men had to weather a storm that saw Guglielmo Vicario forced into an outstanding save to deny Varga from close range, despite the ball initially being out of play.

Moore continued to impress and after picking up a yellow card for Civic, the highly-rated youngster helped get Spurs opener. An incisive dribble took him past Cristian Ramírez and his attempted ball into Lankshear rolled perfectly, allowing Sarr to score from six meters.

The Tottenham players celebrated in front of 1,200 traveling fans before Sarr went close again with a right-footed shot after Lankshear’s clever shot.

It was almost 2-0 again when Pedro Porro cut inside Mohammad Abu Fani and curled a left-footed shot that hit the post and evaded Lankshear.

The second half was briefly delayed after 49 minutes due to smoke becoming visible from flares fired by Ferencvaros fans. Vicario had already held off Matheus Saldanha by this point, but the visitors regrouped and stand-in captain Cristian Romero tipped over a header before Lankshear volleyed wide.

Spurs continued to create chances and should have scored two goals in quick succession just after the hour mark. First, Archie Gray hit the ball to Davies after being surrounded by Ferencvaros players and the ball was passed back to Bissouma, who was playing in Lankshear, but the young striker was tackled.

Two minutes later another quick counterattack resulted in Moore playing a wonderful pass for Werner, who however tried to get around Dibusz and shot into the side netting. Postecoglou changed to Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Johnson after 65 minutes played.

With ten minutes left, Johnson almost took the points but shot against the crossbar after Gray played it in. Ferencvaros smelled blood and after Cebrail Makreckis shot wide, Gray had to parry Abu Fani’s shot before Johnson secured victory.

After Dominic Solanke’s intended pass to Johnson was cleared to Maddison, he played the ball back to the Wales international, who cut inside and curled into the bottom corner via a deflection.

Varga set up a nervy finale when he fired home Ramírez’s cross as the clock showed 90 minutes, but Postecoglou watched his team persevere and take two wins from two in the league phase.
