San Francisco dominates New York without Christian McCaffrey

The San Francisco 49ers defeated the New York Jets shorthanded on Monday, winning their Week 1 game 32-19.

Third-year running back Jordan Mason, who replaced the injured Christian McCaffrey, made sure the 49ers didn’t miss their star player. He ran for 147 yards on 28 carries and scored a touchdown. Mason averaged 5.3 yards per carry and even caught a pass.

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy played efficiently, gaining 231 yards through the air, and Jake Moody converted all six of his field goal attempts.

San Francisco dominated possession and controlled it for 38 minutes and 40 seconds. The 49ers scored on eight straight drives before collapsing on their final drive. They ran 70 plays to the Jets’ 49.

The Niners’ dominant performance spoiled the return to action for Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who played just four games for the team last season before tearing his Achilles tendon. Rodgers finished Monday’s game healthy, completing 13 of 21 passes for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Tyrod Taylor replaced him for New York’s final drive when the game was tied.

The Jets suffered from a weak running game and some poorly timed drops on offense. As a team, New York ran for just 68 yards on 19 rushing attempts. And half of those yards came on the team’s final drive, led by Taylor.

San Francisco will play against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2. The Jets will stay away and face the Tennessee Titans.
