Brookhaven native Tex Sample’s name is placed on the Wall of Freedom in Kansas City, Missouri.

Sample will be honored by the black community at the Monument to Freedom, Justice, and Courage Honoree Celebration at Leon Jordan Memorial Park on August 24. The monument was erected to highlight those whose work has significantly impacted the African American community in Jackson County, Missouri.

Sample was also recently named a Lifetime Trustee of the Saint Paul School of Theology, where he served as a faculty member for 32 years and on the Board of Trustees for seven years, including three years as chair.

In addition, Sample releases his 15th Book in October – “Micro Practices for Justice Ministry” from Upper Room Books.

Sample is the Robert B. and Kathleen Rogers Professor of Church and Society Emeritus at Saint Paul School of Theology. He served as a minister for 15 years and was director of the Massachusetts Council of Churches’ Department of Social Relations in the mid-1960s.

He graduated from Brookhaven High School in 1953 and is the brother of Patricia Sample Smith, who lives in Brookhaven.
