According to State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, New York State’s local sales tax revenues increased slightly by just 0.2 percent in July compared to the same month last year.
The modest $3.1 million increase, totaling $1.82 billion, highlights nearly flat revenue growth, with New York City seeing a 1.2% decline in revenue to a total of $768 million. In contrast, non-city counties and cities saw a 1.2% increase, bringing in $946 million, with 40 of 57 counties reporting increases.
DiNapoli cautioned local officials to have realistic expectations as they prepare their budgets for next year, stressing that sales tax revenues are increasing only minimally. July’s figures are based on estimates, with final quarterly adjustments expected in October.
