Sabrina Carpenter had a Marilyn and Madonna moment at the 2024 VMAs

Bitch, I’m Sabrina!

Tonight, Sabrina Carpenter walked the red carpet at the 2024 MTV VMAs in a dress that was literally made for a pop star.

The singer, who has earned seven nominations – including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Espresso” – is celebrating her success in style, taking inspiration from the one and only Madonna. Carpenter and her stylist Jared Ellner turned to celebrity-approved fashion hotspot Tab Vintage to create a look that was in tune with the moment, and it’s safe to say they more than succeeded. “Her stylist Jared Ellner and his team reached out to us with a truly incredible mood board,” says Tab’s owner Alexis Novak Fashion. “We sent her a set of pieces along these lines and we are so happy with her decision!”

For the VMAs, Carpenter and Ellner chose a silver, beaded Bob Mackie dress from 1991. “It was originally designed for Madonna’s performance at the Academy Awards. It was inspired by Marilyn Monroe in Blondes are on the side of gentlemen and made headlines when she wore it,” says Novak.

But Madonna’s Oscar appearance wasn’t the dress’s only pop culture moment. It also appeared on the always well-dressed Fran Fine on The nanny, Credit goes to costume designer Brenda Cooper. “When Brenda Cooper was looking for an Audrey Hepburn moment for the show, she went to Bob Mackie’s studio and found the pattern piece of that piece. Madonna still has the custom dress that Bob Mackie made for her in her archives, but the other pattern piece is the one (dress) that I believe we have.”
