Ryan Wesley Routh is charged with attempted assassination of Trump, the case is assigned to Judge Aileen Cannon

CNN

Prosecutors on Tuesday filed charges of attempted murder of a major presidential candidate against Ryan Wesley Routh, the man they allege camped out for hours outside Donald Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, armed with a rifle that he pointed through a chain-link fence with a clear shot to the next hole, where the former president went on September 15th.

Routh allegedly “stalked” Trump in Florida for more than a month, prosecutors told a federal judge on Monday. Cell phone data allegedly tracked Routh on the golf course as well as at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence for several days between August and August 18 and the day Routh was arrested.

Routh was originally charged with two weapons offenses, including destroying the serial number of a firearm and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, while the investigation was ongoing.

Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee who oversaw and later dismissed the federal criminal case against the former president, was randomly assigned to oversee the case, court documents show.

In addition to Routh’s two previous firearms charges, the charges against Routh include possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer.

According to the indictment, Routh “forcibly assaulted, resisted, obstructed, intimidated and interfered with ‘Secret Service Special Agent #1,’ an officer and employee of the United States.”

Routh is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.

“The assassination attempt on the former president is a heinous act,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said at a news conference announcing an antitrust lawsuit against Visa. “I am grateful that he is safe, and as I said immediately after the incident, the Justice Department will spare no resources to ensure accountability.”

Garland noted that “in recent days” information about the alleged assassination attempt was uncovered by investigators and included in court records for his hearing.

The attorney general also responded to a statement Trump released Monday night in which he accused the federal government of mishandling the attempted murder investigation and said the Justice Department should “LET FLORIDA HANDLE THE CASE!”

Garland said the Justice Department will “attempt to cooperate consistent with the law and obtain assistance from Florida state officials.”
