Ryan Murphy and Nicholas Chavez respond to criticism of “Monsters”

Monster: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez Showrunner Ryan Murphy and actor Nicholas Chavez have now responded to the Menéndez brothers’ backlash regarding the series.

During a red carpet event for his new FX series, grotesqueMurphy was asked by Entertainment tonightIt is Rachel Smith who comments on this negative response.

“I have a lot to say about that. How much time do you have?” the writer and producer began. “I find it interesting that he made a statement without seeing the show. I know he didn’t see the show while he was in prison. I hope he sees the show and the work that Cooper Koch has done.”

Another reaction from ET came from Nicholas Chavez, who played Lyle Menéndez in Monster Season 2. The actor explained:

“I can understand that it must be incredibly difficult to see the most painful moments of your life on television.”

Murphy also commented on the recent news that Koch visited the prison where the real Menéndez brothers are being held. This visit took place with none other than Kim Kardashian, who has been an advocate for criminal justice reform for several years.

“Look, I find it really, really hard to watch his life on screen,” Murphy noted. “It’s been 30 years since that case; I think that’s tough.”

Murphy continued:

“The interesting thing I find is that he doesn’t mention it in his quote – and that no one from this page spoke – if you watch the show, I would say 60 to 65 percent of our show, in the scripts and in the film form, is about the abuse and what they say happened to them. We do that very carefully, we give them their day in court and they talk openly about it.”

“We are presenting the facts largely from their point of view. We have been researching for three years; everything is true,” he added.

In response to the question from ET which sources Murphy used during his research process for The story of Lyle and Erik Menendezthe showrunner replied:

“Just anything we could find. I mean, I have such a huge team when I do these biographies. (…) What’s interesting is that in this age when people can really talk about sexual abuse – which I couldn’t when I was young – it can be controversial to talk about it, to write about it, to write about all points of view.”

“The interesting thing I think about (this season of) Monster is that it is a Rashomon kind of approach,” Murphy stressed. “There were four people involved, two of them dead and two still alive with (their) point of view. But what about the parents? We had an obligation as storytellers to also try to bring in their perspective based on our research, which we did.”

Murphy finally noted how “very proud” he was of the work and the acting in this second season of the Monster franchise on Netflix, adding: “I think Nicholas (Chavez), Cooper (Koch), Javier (Bardem), Ari (Graynor), Chloë (Sevigny) and Nathan Lane are all incredible.

On the same red carpet, Chavez was asked if he would like to meet the real Menéndez brothers if he had the chance.

“In my opinion, as an actor, you come in and play a role. And then at the end of the day you have to have the dignity to be able to say: “It was a role I played and a job I had.” (But) then you have to let it go and move on to the next project.”

Monster: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez also shows scenes of a very homoerotic relationship between the two Menéndez brothers. But when asked if he knew where this plot came from, Chavez replied: “That’s an interesting question. I don’t know.”

Murphy elaborated on the question, saying:

“I think people are confused about that too. When you watch the show, it represents the viewpoints and theories of so many people who were involved in the case. Dominick Dunne (played by Lane) has written several articles where he talks about this theory and why he thinks it’s valid.”

He continued: “What we do on the show is he talks about it. We present his point of view, just like we present Leslie Abramson’s point of view. The show presents over 10 points of view on different events… so when people watch this and see that, that’s someone on our show making a narrative statement about it, “I think that really happened.” We had an obligation to show all of this and we did.”
