Rutgers suffers major loss in defense due to injury to Mo Touré

There are four days left until the start of the 2024 college football season with Week 0 and just over a week before nearly all teams begin their seasons on Labor Day weekend in Week 1. August was a busy month with training camps during the dog days of summer and at this point, coaches are hoping to arrive fully healthy for their first game. That won’t be the case for Virginia Tech’s Week 4 opponent, who suffered a tough loss on defense.

On Tuesday, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano announced that his star linebacker Mohamed Touré will sit out the season after suffering a torn ACL. It is the second time in two years that he will miss an entire season due to the same injury he suffered in 2022.

Toure was recently named to the preseason Butkus Ward Watch List and is a big blow to a team that was set up for a strong 2024 season with the contract extensions and one of the easier schedules in the Big Ten. Last season, he had 92 tackles, 44 solo and 4.5 sacks. He also had a forced fumble and an interception.

He had five tackles against Virginia Tech in the Scarlet Knights’ 35-16 win, and Toure recorded eight tackles in Rutgers’ Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl victory over Miami. Twice last season, he finished games against Maryland and Iowa with 11 tackles.

Rutgers has some time to work on its replacement, as the Scarlet Knights have a fairly easy first three weeks of the season with home games against Howard and Akron before an off week on Sept. 14 and their first real road game at Virginia Tech on Sept. 21.

Last season, the Hokies suffered a loss at the end of training camp when tight end Nick Gallo suffered a season-ending injury before their opener against Old Dominion.
