Rustic lakefront campground near Tahquamenon Falls closes for renovations

MACKINAC COUNTY, MI – One of the Upper Peninsula’s more remote campgrounds is closing its gates for the fall for repairs.

The Milakokia Lake State Forest campground will be closed after Labor Day to begin improvements for better traffic flow, better boating access, and replacement of dry toilets.

The campground is just over an hour from Tahquamenon Falls State Park, which operates the Milakokia Lake campground.

According to the Tahquamenon Falls State Park Facebook page, the campground will be closed for renovations from September 3 to November 30.

The rustic campground is located on its namesake, Milakokia Lake, about 25 minutes inland from Lake Superior in Mackinac County.

The campground is located directly on the lake shore and has boat ramps for kayaks, canoes and small watercraft.

Since the water is about 8 meters deep at its deepest point, the lake is also a popular fishing spot.

Anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish including largemouth bass, northern pike, smallmouth bass, black bass, bluegill, walleye and yellow perch.

The campsite is divided into two loops and offers 35 pitches for tents and small and large trailers.

Stays at the campsite are limited to a maximum of 15 days. Amenities include toilets and drinking water from a well with a hand pump.

All locations are on a first come, first served basis. Reservation options are not available.
