Basketball icon Derrick Rose announced his retirement from the NBA after a 16-year career on Thursday, but the former star made sure the day wasn’t just about him.

According to ESPN’s Malika Andrews, Rose sent bouquets of 16 flowers to those who have had the most impact on him throughout his career. According to Andrews, the list also included Phil Jackson, his friends and his former coaches.

“He told me that today he knows he’s going to get his flowers, so he wanted to make sure he gave the roses – pun intended – away to those who really shaped him and shaped his career,” Andrews said (1: 20 marks). “He actually sends 16 roses to people like Phil Jackson, his four best friends, his coaches who helped him through the ups and downs.”

In addition to sending flowers, Rose also paid tribute to the cities where he played by taking out full-page ads in local newspapers in Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Minnesota, Detroit and Memphis to announce his retirement.

Per Andrews, Rose said he decided to take a break from basketball to be with his family after years of constantly traveling.

“Knowing that I gave everything for the game, I am confident in my decision,” said Rose. “Basketball was just the beginning for me. Now it’s important that I give everything for my family – they deserve it.”

Rose, the No. 1 pick in the 2008 NBA draft, was named Rookie of the Year before becoming the youngest MVP in NBA history in 2011 at just 22 years old. After an outstanding start to his career, injuries took their toll on the star as he suffered a torn ACL in the 2012 playoffs, which kept him off the field for the entire 2013–14 season.

His time in Chicago ended in 2016 when he was traded to the New York Knicks. While he never truly returned to MVP form, Rose was a valuable role player for most of his career and ultimately spent his final season with the Memphis Grizzlies.
