Roosevelt Pool closed for the rest of the season after near-drowning

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Roosevelt Pool will remain closed for the remainder of the season after a child suffered serious injuries while jumping into the water on Monday.

A spokesman for the city of Toledo said Tuesday that authorities had made the “difficult decision” to close the swimming pool for the season earlier than planned out of respect for the boy’s family.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident at Roosevelt Pool where an 11-year-old boy climbed over the locked fence after hours and nearly drowned,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the child and his family during this incredibly difficult time and we continue to hope that he makes a full recovery.”

The city said an investigation is currently underway to ensure that the safety measures in place are as strict as possible.

“Our swimming pools are meant to be places of joy and relaxation where children and families can create beautiful memories. This incident has deeply affected us all and we are determined to do everything we can to support the family and reassure the community that something like this will never happen again,” the statement said.

The incident occurred on August 12 at around 5 p.m. Police on the scene told 13 Action News that a 9-year-old and an 11-year-old rode their bikes to the scene, jumped a fence and the 11-year-old jumped into the pool. The 9-year-old ran to get help.

The boy nearly drowned and was taken to a nearby hospital where he is in critical condition, police said. His mother told 13 Action News at the scene that he cannot swim.
