Ron Johnson: FBI and Secret Service “delay” investigation into Trump’s assassination

Senator Ron Johnson accused the FBI and Secret Service of blocking a Senate investigation into the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump last month.

Johnson (Republican of Wisconsin), who is involved in a bipartisan investigation into the Trump assassination, argued that the FBI and Secret Service had hampered the investigation by handing over redacted documents – often on the day of key interviews.

“All I can tell you is that the Secret Service and the FBI are basically lazy. They are stonewalling us,” Johnson said, venting his anger on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”

“From my perspective, we’re not getting anything from the Secret Service or the FBI. We’ve requested all of their 302s, their transcripts of their interviews with hundreds of people. They’re not giving us those either.”

Numerous organizations are currently investigating how 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks managed to climb onto a roof on July 13 and fire eight shots. One of them hit Trump’s right ear and caused him to bleed.

In the shooting, firefighter Corey Comperatore (50) was killed and two other participants in the rally – David Dutch (57) and James Copenhaver (74) – were seriously injured. Crooks was killed by police officers.

“If you want to design an investigation to raise suspicion and spread conspiracy theories, that’s exactly how you do an investigation like this,” Johnson added. “It was just mind-boggling that they released the body for cremation before anyone had seen the autopsy or toxicology reports.”

“It only fuels mistrust and conspiracy theories.”

The chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Gary Peters (D-Michigan), is leading an investigation into the assassination in the upper house. Johnson previously chaired this committee.

In addition, there are investigations by the newly established bipartisan task force of the House of Representatives and the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security.

The Secret Service has come under intense scrutiny because of the security deficiencies that preceded the attack.

At the fateful rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a gunman came closer to assassinating a current or former U.S. president than at any time since the assassination of former President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Kimberly Cheatle resigned as Secret Service director last month amid political pressure. At least five agency officials have been placed on administrative duty as a result of the debacle, meaning they are barred from being involved in operational planning, ABC News reported.

The Post has reached out to both the FBI and the Secret Service for comment.

“They are the only ones who have access to this information until they decide what information to give us and when to give it to us. They have total control,” Johnson continued.

The FBI said any suggestion that the bureau would “interfere” in the congressional investigation into the assassination was “inaccurate and unfounded.”

“We followed standard procedures in handling the crime scene and evidence. The FBI continues its thorough investigation to obtain the fullest possible picture of the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and we remain committed to the greatest possible transparency as we continue to share information with Congress,” an FBI spokesman told The Washington Post when asked about Johnson’s comments.

Regarding Johnson’s complaints about the release of Crooks’ body for cremation, the spokesman argued that this was done “in accordance with normal procedures”.

The Senate is currently in recess but is scheduled to reconvene next month.
