Rob Staton says it is doable to finish where Sheffield Wednesday need to finish this season

After the first five games of the Championship season, Sheffield Wednesday are in 20th place.

Sheffield Wednesday finished 20th in the Championship table last season.

Danny Rohl and his first team achieved a memorable exit from the second division, but after a seemingly impressive summer transfer window, expectations for the 2024/25 season were much higher.

So far, the Owls have disappointed.

Sheffield Wednesday beat Plymouth Argyle 4-0 on the opening day of the season and that victory may have raised expectations for this early stage of the season.

Wednesday have not won since then, but ended a run of three consecutive defeats with a 1-1 draw against QPR at Hillsborough last weekend.

On Tuesday evening, Sheffield Wednesday beat Blackpool 1-0 in the Carabao Cup and Rohl and his team therefore go into this weekend as winners.

The Owls travel to Kenilworth Road to face Luton Town this weekend in what should be another challenging game.

Rob Staton’s verdict on Sheffield Wednesday’s ranking this season

At the start of this season, many were betting that Sheffield Wednesday would be the surprise contenders in the championship.

Since then, fans have significantly tempered their expectations and BBC pundit Rob Staton has revealed what position he thinks the Owls need to finish in the Championship to “move through”.

Speaking on Football Heaven on Tuesday night, Staton said: “A good season for Wednesday would probably be 15th, right?

“Don’t get caught up in the relegation battle and feel reasonably comfortable in the first two weeks of April. That’s progress.”

Can Sheffield Wednesday avoid relegation from the Championship this season?

Given the results and performances of the last four games, many may believe that Wednesday will once again be fighting against relegation this season.

But after the solid performance at QPR, where Wednesday conceded an unfortunate and controversial goal in the last minute, there is a feeling that things will soon work out for the team.

And it was only a few months ago that Wednesday were relegated from the Championship and stayed in the league through Rohl’s magic.

Plus, it’s still very early in the season, with 41 games left to play, so there’s no reason to panic about Wednesday’s chances at the moment.

Rohl has already proven himself in the past and if his strikers can finally rediscover their goal-scoring instinct with some fine-tuning, Wednesday could climb up the table.

A 15th place is definitely achievable.
