Road at Mount Washington closed after truck crashes into railroad bridge

A section of Crane Avenue was closed Friday after a private dump truck struck a railroad bridge on Mount Washington in Pittsburgh.

Crane Avenue has been closed to traffic between Route 51 and Dagmar Avenue since Friday afternoon, the city of Pittsburgh said.

According to Emily Bourne, a spokeswoman for the city, the truck crashed into the bridge overnight.

The railroad trestle is owned and operated by the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway.

Once the bridge has been inspected and cleared, Crane Avenue will be reopened, the city said.

In the meantime, motorists should avoid the area and follow posted diversion signs.

A portion of Route 51, also known as Saw Mill Run Boulevard in this section, was closed in early August as workers began demolishing the Saw Mill Run Boulevard bridge near Woodruff Street. Detours are in effect.

Parts of the bridge will remain closed throughout the month as workers plan to demolish (but not blow up) them, PennDOT officials told TribLive news partner WTAE.
