Rise of technology-enabled home care for seniors
Aaron Marcum, Founder of Breakaway Home Care Accelerator

Thanks to advances in medical care and the resilience of the human spirit, most people today live longer. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention supports this and publishes data on the increase in life expectancy in the USA, with the average American man now living to 74 years and women almost 80 years.

As a trusted healthcare partner, my team and I are constantly working to help our clients provide the best care to the “Silver Tsunami” – the rapidly growing senior population in need of care. In the past, nursing homes have served a purpose, but the majority of this population demands a different approach. Many seniors value their independence and the comfort of familiarity. The idea of leaving home and going into a nursing home is often unsettling. This is where home care is the best solution.

Imagine receiving the care your parent needs in the comfort of their own home—a space filled with precious memories and established routines. Home care allows seniors to maintain their sense of control and dignity, which is critical to their overall well-being.

The benefits of home care go beyond the emotional aspect. Studies repeatedly show that a familiar environment can lead to faster recovery times and better treatment outcomes because stress and anxiety – the same factors that hinder healing – are significantly reduced.

The demand for home care reflects the rise of our elderly population. According to IBIS, the home care industry in the U.S. reached an incredible $136.2 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach $180 billion within the next five years. This growth curve clearly shows the increasing need for innovative solutions in home care.

Technology in home care

I started my first home care company in 2002. Six years later, I founded Home Care Pulse, which from then on has been instrumental in improving the quality of care across the home care industry. I have seen the worst and the best during this time, and the recurring trend in home care excites me again. Technology has made such a difference and even changed the way we deliver care at home. For example, wearable health monitors that monitor vitals like heart rate and blood pressure in real time allow healthcare providers to remotely monitor patients and intervene proactively. Telemedicine consultations are another powerful medium that connects patients with specialists from the comfort of their homes, eliminating stressful travel and long waits in crowded spaces. No wonder we are living longer.

A personalized care approach

The future of home care continues to revolve around leveraging technology to deliver comprehensive and personalized care plans. In addition to medical care, these plans can include social support and medication management that can be delivered directly on smartphones, virtual support groups for seniors with chronic conditions, or grocery delivery services tailored to nutritional needs. Home health care can ensure our aging population receives the treatment they deserve while maintaining the independence and quality of life they desire.

However, the Silver Tsunami is both a demographic shift and a human story playing out in countless families. I have witnessed firsthand the challenges and triumphs that seniors and their loved ones face as they age and have to make decisions. The emotional toll can be significant and can be accompanied by fears about the future.

Home care can be an effective way to ease these fears. Children who worry about their aging parents living alone find comfort in knowing that a qualified caregiver is checking in on them regularly. People facing their own health issues can also feel a sense of relief knowing that their spouse can receive the care they need in the familiar surroundings of their parents.

Building a robust ecosystem

During my time as an entrepreneur in home care, I have spent most of my time in endless communication between a network of professionals – from doctors and social workers to technology developers. Because our goal is to create a continuum of care where aging seniors have access to the support they are offered in their preferred environment. Of course, there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to home care. There will be situations that require institutional care. Regardless, a smooth flow of information between healthcare providers and family members is key to success to ensure everyone is in the loop and the senior is receiving the best care possible.

Navigating the silver tsunami together

The Silver Tsunami doesn’t have to be a tidal wave. Creating a future where our seniors can age gracefully and comfortably, surrounded by the people and places they love, is possible, especially with available technology – a win for them, a win for the healthcare system, and ultimately a win for society.

This future will continue to require a concerted effort to ensure our ageing population receives the care they deserve so they can live out their retirement years in genuine happiness while maintaining their independence. The Silver Tsunami is also a wave of opportunity to rewrite the conversations around aged care and steer it towards a future where ageing is not a burden but a journey full of sustained growth, connection and wellbeing.
