Richard Kilty: Sprinter completes Olympic “recovery mission”

Kilty overcame serious injury problems in the run-up to Paris to take part in his third Olympic Games.

Just 12 months ago he was coaching the British team at the World Championships in Budapest while still recovering from Achilles tendon surgery.

But he fought his way to the Stade de France “despite his injuries” and tried to add to his medal collection.

The sprinter has stood on the winners’ podium at world and European championships, both indoors and outdoors, as well as at the Commonwealth Games. The only thing missing to complete his set was the Olympic Games.

After beating Italy to gold in Tokyo in 2021, Kilty, Zharnel Hughes and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake were stripped of their silver medals due to Ujah’s subsequent 22-month suspension.

All three were on the relay team in Paris with Jeremiah Azu and Louie Hinchliffe when Great Britain finished behind Canada and South Africa in the final, and Kilty had accomplished his mission.

“Last year I just thought ‘the Olympics are a year away’ and I almost bit my mouth guard, pushed through despite my injuries and threw everything I had into it,” Kilty told BBC Look North.

“I had won Olympic silver in Tokyo, I had delivered the necessary performance. I had become world and European champion.”

“To finally come out and redeem it and bring the medal back for good was incredible.”
