Richard Gadd wins for Baby Reindeer

Richard Gadd received the award for Best Actor in a Miniseries for his role in Baby reindeer at the 2024 Emmys.

Gadd began his acceptance speech by saying that he had not prepared any remarks because he did not believe he was in a category against Fellow travelers Matt Bomer, FargoThey are Jon Hamm, Feud: Capote vs. the Swans“Tom Hollander and Ripley‘s Andrew Scott.

“Jon Hamm, I’m your biggest fan, as I told you over and over again last night for ages, but this isn’t the world,” he said, before thanking the people he forgot to thank when he accepted the award for best screenplay in a comedy series earlier in the evening, including his parents.

“I want to thank my mom and dad — another thing I glaringly missed last time,” he noted. “They were there for me, a constant source of love and support. What I’m most grateful for is that they never told me what to do with my life, and they never told me who to be. And I think that’s the greatest gift a parent can give their children.”

Gadd concluded, “They always say, ‘Follow your heart and the rest will follow.’ I think that’s good advice: Follow your heart and the rest will follow.”

Baby reindeer went into the 2024 Emmys with 11 nominations, also taking home awards for Best Miniseries, Supporting Actress in a Miniseries for Jessica Gunning, and more.

The 2024 Emmys will be the second to be held this year. The 2023 Emmys were postponed due to the strikes of both the screenwriters and actors last year.

The presenters of this year’s biggest night on television include Kristen Wiig, Viola Davis, Lily Gladstone, Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Matt Bomer, Colin Farrell, Mindy Kaling, Jimmy Kimmel, Greta Lee, John Leguizamo, George Lopez, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jean Smart.

This year’s nominees were led by FX’s Shogun (with 25 nominations) and The bear (23, a comedy series record), Hulu’s Only murders in the building (21), HBO/Max’s True Detective: Nightland (19) and Netflix’s The Crown (18).

Netflix led all nominations with 107 total nominations, followed by FX with 93, HBO with 91 and Apple TV+ with 72. Disney as a whole, which includes projects from FX, ABC, Hulu and Disney+, achieved a personal best this year with 183 Emmy nominations.
