Rich Homie Quan, a fixture of Atlanta’s rap scene, dies at 34

Rich Homie Quan, an Atlanta rapper known for singles such as “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” and “Type of Way,” has died. He was 34.

Quan’s death was confirmed to the Daily Beast on Thursday by a spokesperson for the Fulton County coroner. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed, and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

According to TMZ, which first reported Quan’s death, the rapper was found in his Atlanta home on Thursday. The tabloid reported that his girlfriend discovered his body and called 911. She told the emergency dispatcher that Quan was not breathing and had no heartbeat.

Speculation about Quan’s death circulated on social media on Thursday after rapper Boosie Badazz referenced it in a series of tweets, saying he heard Quan “JUST overdosed.”

“Never forget your smile, the way you talk and of course your music,” Boosie added in another tweet.

Born in 1989, Quan found his groove in the lush Atlanta rap scene of the 2010s as a lyrical, melodic rapper with a distinctive trap sound.

His breakthrough came in 2013 with “Type of Way” and his greatest success came as a member of the Rich Gang, a spin-off project of Cash Money Records, where he teamed up with fellow Atlanta native Young Thug for the popular song “Lifestyle” in 2014.

His relationship with Thug, whose real name is Jeffrey Lamar Williams, appeared to be falling apart behind the scenes, but Quan continued to insist there was no falling out between the two and called for Thug’s release following his 2022 arrest on gang charges.

When Thug’s trial began last November, his defense team called out the court to showcase his artistic prowess, according to Lifestyle.

Quan’s name came up during the trial this week when “Thugger,” as he is known, laughed off a direct question about him from a witness on the stand.

Colleagues, employees and friends rushed to the scene on Thursday to pay their last respects to the rapper.

“Damn little brother we were just talking about making a video,” Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz said on Instagram. “Especially praying for you and your family and anyone struggling with anything. My condolences brother.”

“Rest in peace my brother Rich homie Quan,” Jacquees said on X. “I love you forever. #Richgang.”
