Rhett Lashlee gives injury update ahead of Week 2 against BYU

SMU OLB Isaiah Smith talks about BYU and the first two games for the Mustangs

SMU will compete against each other for the first time in a power conference as a member of the ACC and BYU on Friday evening in Dallas. An entertaining crowd is expected at Gerald R. Ford Stadium, as the Mustangs once again compete at the highest level. Rhett Lashlee The fact that the program has been so successful in recent years certainly contributes to this.

Just a few days before kickoff, there was some injury news that Lashlee had to discuss. Almost all of it was positive from the game against Houston Christian. Lashlee named three players who struggled with problems, but expects all of them to be BYU.

“I find Moochie (Dixon) should be available this week,” said Lashlee. “He just had back spasms last week, so we held him back. I think Rooster (Knighton) should be available this week. LJ (Johnson)we’re taking him day by day. I think he’ll be fine…I think we’re in pretty good shape with everyone that played last week and the few we kept should be available. I don’t think there will be any changes.”

Johnson and Knighton are both running backs, but only the former has made a real impression so far. In two games, Johnson has rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, making him SMU’s second-leading runner. Knighton has only one run of four yards, in the season-opening win against Nevada. You can also add two pass catches for 26 yards to his stats.

Based on Lashlee’s words, both should be available against BYU, which would give SMU an even deeper backfield when they face a Big 12 opponent.

As for Dixon, the wide receiver hasn’t made much of a contribution yet. He did get to play against Nevada, but his only recorded stat was a tackle after an interception by quarterback Preston Stone. He hasn’t had a pass reception to this point in the season. Hopefully that changes Friday night and the fifth-year player brings a new dynamic to the SMU offense.

The Mustangs have a chance to start their season 3-0 before having a week off. BYU won’t be an easy task, but getting a few offensive players fit will help.
