Rhamondre Stevenson’s costly pattern ruins another Patriots drive in Week 3

The Patriots’ offense isn’t generating much excitement, aside from the potential start of Drake Maye either this season or next. However, one of the team’s stars continues to be Rhamondre Stevenson, who broke through as a rookie and displaced Damien Harris from his starting position.

This year, the running back has been one of the most consistent players, especially after making a concerted effort to add passing to his repertoire. That has made Stevenson one of the most accomplished runners in the league, and the Patriots have benefited from it.

That remains the case for the 2024 season so far, as Stevenson has rushed for 201 yards and two touchdowns on 46 carries in two games. He has been the shoulder Jacoby Brissett could lean on and move the football down the field, something that was not expected given the state of the Patriots’ offensive line.

But an old problem from the early days of Stevenson’s career is beginning to rear its ugly head again, an aspect he seems to have put to rest in the 2023 season.

He has fumbled the football in three games so far this year, recovering it in the first two weeks, but he had no luck Thursday night against the Jets, leading to a quick drive and field goal for Aaron Rodgers.

It’s a habit he seemed to have broken after his disastrous 2022 season, when he recorded four fumbles, many of which Patriots fans unfortunately remember.

While it’s early enough in the season that Stevenson shouldn’t continue this pattern, it’s still concerning considering how much the Patriots offense has improved in terms of preventing turnovers, such as Brissett’s lack of interceptions thus far.
