Result predictions, tips against Colorado Buffaloes

play

Seeking its first 4-0 start in six years, UCF welcomes Colorado to a sold-out Bounce House for the first time on Saturday afternoon – and in front of casual and hardcore college football fans from across the country.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in Orlando, when the Knights (3-0, 1-0) face the star-studded Buffaloes (3-1, 1-0) for an early share of the Big 12 lead have to win. Both teams made impressive comebacks in the final stages and won their opening games of the conference. UCF rallied from a 21-point deficit at TCU and Colorado hit a Hail Mary before beating Baylor in overtime.

Heisman Trophy candidate Travis Hunter and projected first-round quarterback Shedeur Sanders are the main attractions for Deion Sanders’ Colorado squad. But the Knights boast the No. 1 rushing offense in the Football Bowl Subdivision with 375.7 yards per game, led by RJ Harvey and KJ Jefferson.

Which black and gold team will prevail? UCF reporter Chris Boyle, sports reporter Chris Vinel and columnist Ken Willis offer their predictions for the highly anticipated showdown.

Your previous records:

  • Boyle: 3-0
  • Vinel: 2-1
  • Willis: 2-1

This could – maybe even should – be a shootout with the sheer amount of offensive playmakers on the opposite sideline. If UCF fails to pressure Shedeur Sanders, it can pick apart the Knights’ secondary, with Travis Hunter, Jimmy Horn Jr. and LaJohntay Wester able to provide separation on the field.

On the other hand, the Knights have been running through, around and over the opposing defense so far this season. KJ Jefferson, RJ Harvey and Kobe Hudson brought the team back from a 21-point deficit at TCU, a huge difference from UCF’s performance in the second half of 2023.

UCF enjoys being in the national spotlight, looking back to the 2018 Cincinnati game as a notable example, and FBC Mortgage Stadium looks set to rebound stronger than it has in years. Weather could also play a key role, both due to humidity and the possibility of heavier rain affecting passing plays. Colorado’s ineffectiveness on the ground could be fatal in this case.

Ready for an understatement?

UCF runs the ball well — so well that it leads the country with 375 rushing yards per game. This week they face a Colorado defense that ranks 82nd of 133 against ground attacks.

Meanwhile, the Buffaloes aren’t running the ball well. At all. They rank 129th nationally in yards per week, and the Knights’ defense ranks fifth in the same category.

If Hurricane Helene leaves a trail of sloppy conditions on Saturday and limits temporary attacks, cheers for Colorado.

Sometimes you overthink these things (see Chris Boyle above). Sometimes when you overthink it, you throw enough pasta at the wall and something sticks (see also Chris, who loves his pasta).

I think the weather will be great assuming neither team finds a way to fall apart early. The bermudagrass field will be sloppy and slow, puddling at best. It will be a day for hard workers, and things aren’t going so well in Colorado.

Even though the humidity in Boulder remains in the 20s these days, Saturday in Orlando will be somewhere between a construction site Porta-John and Satan’s armpit.
